Some people like to buy movies, some people indulge in chocolates, some people like music while the ultimate fashionista likes a Birkin Bag! Everyone who loves fashion to the fullest knows who Hermes is and what a Birkin bag is. One of the most exclusive pieces on the market today, it is the epitome of status. Why you ask? Birkin bags start out at $7,000 and go all the way up to $280,000. Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Oprah Winfrey has these collector pieces. It may sound like if I have money I can buy one but that is not the case. These bags are UBER exclusive to only Hermes top clients. So it's not like you can go in and buy one and never come back again. They usually are sold to their most loyal customers who shop frequently and indulgently. The Birkin bag takes up to a minimum of 3 weeks to be completed as they are all completely sewn by hand. They are distributed throughout Hermes boutiques around the world on unpredictable schedules and scarce quantities that creates exclusivity around the product. The waiting list for these bags has been up to 2 years depending on the type of materials it is made out of. Birkin bags are usually lined in goat skin and will match the exterior color of the bag. The hardware on Birkin's is usually plated in gold or palladium which doesn't tarnish like silver. All of the locks and keys are number coded like a social security number. Hermes Birkin's are one of the few brands out in the market that are not mass produced or sewn by machine. Yes your Louis Vuitton is in fact sewn by machines. Doesn't mean they still aren't fabulous (one of my favorite brands.) Hermes truly is the epitome of ‘you get what you pay for’. You’re paying for handwork that is a rare commodity anymore. The Kelly Bag is a mini sister to the Birkin which is not as expensive but also not as in demand. Even celebs have to get on waiting lists. There is a larger size of the Birkin that is for travel and I recently spotted a gorgeous camel one that I died over priced at approx. $11,000. They are not cheap but everyone that buys one needs to look at it as an investment that you will have for a lifetime. They are truly timeless!
