Micky Friedmann is an international DJ, high in demand in clubs all around the world. No surprise there, as he is extremely talented at what he does, blending sexuality and sophistication in his music, he is also self-assured, sexy and very easy on the eyes. Says Micky “I don't ever want to be that DJ who is too predictable; I don't want people to know what's coming next. ’Intelligent' is the word I like. I want to play music that is intelligent so people go home with an experience, something new in their heads, and hopefully they will have learned that they love that new, sexy sound”. OTA: How did you first become interested in being a DJ? MF: Electronic music always fascinated me. I was educated on classical music but learned to love club music going out to clubs in Tel Aviv since I was 16. When I was dancing in the ballet company in Berlin in 1998, I decided to buy turntables and started to practice on my own to learn to spin just for the fun of it. I fell in love with it. Even though I had the skills, It was only after ending my ballet career that I begun thinking about being a professional DJ. OTA: Did you ever think you would have such popularity and become as in-demand as you are now? MF: I believe that hard work pays off. I am a very devoted workaholic, Success and popularity are very different in the eyes of each and every one of us. Though I’m very happy with my achievements, I know the road to consistent success is never ending. As an artist one should never be happy with their work otherwise you never grow and improve. OTA: What inspires you in creating your music? MF: Creation is a wonder. Just like choreographing during the time I was a ballet dancer. Once I start creating music or choreograph steps, it is like a drug, the inspiration to me, comes from the actual process of creation. OTA: You first started out as a dancer. Can you tell us about your dancing career? MF: I had a very fulfilling and rewarding career as a soloist ballet dancer. I started when I was 11 and could not think about anything else but becoming a professional ballet dancer. I was 19 when I got my first contract with the Israeli ballet in Tel Aviv. After that I danced in Switzerland, Holland and Germany where I decided to quit after 7 seasons with the Berlin Ballet. OTA: And of course, you were and still are, a successful model. How did that start for you? MF: An Israeli photographer spotted me on the beach in Tel Aviv. Modeling was never my main job. A full time model career is very dull and quite humiliating unless you reach the level of top models like Caludia, Giselle or Natalia Vodianova. Male models don’t have that kind of status in the fashion world. I was very fortunate to work with some of the world’s most amazing photographers like Pierre et Gilles, Greg Gorman and Andreas Bitesnich. Nowadays I have less and less time for modeling. OTA: Out of all of your careers, you must have an amusing story or two. Any you would like to share? MF: I think one of the most amazing experiences for me was when my mom came to hear me at the club I play at in Berlin. She used to come see me on stage as a dancer, then seeing her at the VIP lounge having a glass of Vurve-clicquot, bouncing to my beats. Another experience I will not forget was before my debut set in Toronto, my flight had a 4-hour delay because of heavy fog over Toronto. After the plane finally took off and was in the air I didn´t think anything could happen anymore when the pilot turned the plane 180° and flew back to JFK. I was so disappointed. At JFK we were told to wait at the gate since we already cleared international customs. After 10 hours waiting the plane took off again and I literally arrived 30 minutes before my set. That night was a huge success and FLY Toronto is one of my favorite clubs to DJ at. OTA: What aspect of being a DJ is your favorite and what is your least favorite? MF: The favorite aspect of being a DJ for me is choosing music playing it and watch the crowd flip out on the dance floor. The least favorite is the part is packing before traveling. OTA: What are you most passionate about and why? MF: I am most passionate about my music. It is all that really matters in my life. Searching it, finding it and playing it. The music has the power to change my mood from sad to happy and from aggressive to chill. OTA: I know you don’t get a lot of free time, but when you do, what do you like to do? MF: In my free time I sleep, work out and watch movies. OTA: Could you tell us about what you have coming up in the future? MF: Music production is the most important aspect of my future. I am working with Alex Botar a DJ colleague and also a producer on our second track - ´shake & rub´. We are planning to collaborate on 6 or 8 new tracks in 2010. 2010 is going to be even crazier for me than 2009. New gig dates are coming in so I will be traveling a lot all around the world. I am very excited for a big Asia tour planned.
